Experience, Strength & Hope: Destigmatizing Substance Use Disorders & Mental Health in the Legal Profession

  • December 05, 2022
  • Jury Assembly Room

Lawyers have some of the highest rates of substance use disorders and mental health diagnoses among the professional community. Vicarious or “secondary” trauma and the culture of law exacerbate these rates. Even with the breadth of treatments available, lawyers are some of the last to seek help, leading sometimes to catastrophic consequences both personally and for their clients, often because of the stigma associated with SUDs and mental health. In this one-hour CLE, we drill into some of the underlying causes of these high rates, what the roots of stigma are, and how the legal community can work to overcome the stigma so that lawyers can seek the help they need and do the good work they are meant to do.

The speaker is Melissa Chureau who is DOJ attorney who is also a certified mindfulness coach and often presents on mindfulness in the law for law schools and lawyer groups.

*This CLE is anticipated to be approved for mental health / substance abuse credit.
